Spas and Hot Tub Safety

Here at Town and Country Pools, we understand that many hot tub owners have young children. And while spending time in spas or hot tubs with your children is a great way to spend the winter hours and soak away the winter chill, there are still precautions that need to be taken. Please follow our hot tub safety tips below to ensure safety for your entire family.

Spas and Hot Tub Safety Tipshot tub safety spas

  • Constant supervision is the number one safety rule in and around a hot tub or a swimming pool. There should be a “no running” or rough-housing rule on the deck as well. Your deck can become slippery when wet and could lead to slips, falls or even head injuries.
  • Never leave your children alone.
Just as you would never leave a child unattended in a bathtub, you should never leave a child alone in hot tubs or spas.
  • Be extra cautious of the water temperature.
Spas and hot tubs are meant to circulate hot water.  This hot water can pose certain health risks to young children such as dehydration and heatstroke.  To prevent dehydration and heatstroke, Town and Country Pools recommends keeping hot tub water temperatures below 104 degrees.  However, be aware that this temperature may still be too hot for young children to tolerate.  Ensuring your children are comfortable and well-hydrated while spending time in the hot tub is critical. Parents should minimize the amount of time their children spend in the hot tub. A child’s internal body temperature rises more quickly than an adult’s it can get dangerous, quickly. Ten minutes is a safe maximum limit for children.
  • Spas and Hot Tub Covers
The hot tub should be covered and locked when not in use. Having a cover for your hot tub or spa is a great way to prevent your child or animal from falling in.  However, these should not be considered a foolproof method of protecting your children. Diligent use of a hot tub cover also keeps the water free from debris and traps the heated water and could lower your utility bills. Clients can purchase a hot tub cover from Town and Country Pools at the same time you buy your hot tub or spa.
  • Use Proper Safety Drain Covers
A spas drain covers are especially dangerous to children. Limbs, hair and even clothing can quickly become tangled or stuck in drains, which can lead to drowning. Make sure you spas or hot tubs drains are covered with the proper drain covers to prevent such injuries.
